Back in the day when I lived in Summit County for 1 winter I heard of this magical place known as Berthoud Pass. People would rave about this place as if it were the promised land. Unfortunately I didn’t take advantage of it while it was around.

I had the luck of living in Winter Park during the area’s last revival – I think it was from 1998-2002 or so. What an amazing ride! The terrain was (is) very challenging, and because the ski area encompassed land on both sides of Berthoud Pass there were always great conditions somewhere on the mountain – usually all over. The staff was fantastic, the funky lodge was fun, the food was good, and the other skiers and riders were usually super cool (who couldn’t have a huge smile on their face at Berthoud?)! My favorite run was Skull Bite. People still ski here all the time – sometimes more folks then when it was open. I went in January 2010 and it is still epic. This area will never die.
