Berthoud Pass Backcountry COLORADO Backcountry Area Resort (Are you this resort?)
The Berthoud Pass backcountry extends from the summit of Stanley Peak to the “110” at the far northern edge of Current Creek. Included in this area are runs known as the 80’s & 90’s, Current Creek Headwall, Deno’s Choke, Big Roll and Floral Park.
Names such as the 80’s and 90’s, including the 110 are derived from the US Forest Service designation which allows that Agency to monitor avalanche activity as it impacts US Highway 40.
The earliest backcountry skiers showed up in the 1930’s and were followed by the famous “Hairbager’s” in the 1980’s who, as a group of 8, skied virtually every face from Berthoud Falls to the Mary Jane Ski Area.
Berthoud, also known to the old-timers as “Bertha”, is the scene of hundreds of backcountry users who deposit their P-Tex bases on the rocks of “Hells Half Acre” religiously in early October and their brain cells at the higher elevations well into July.
