Breckenridge, a member of the Vail Resorts family, is big! 18 lifts service 4 peaks with a 3,398 foot vertical drop on 2,358 acres of skiable terrain. That includes 722 acres of bowl skiing and 155 trails. Ten of the lifts are high capacity modern “SuperChairs” so you don’t spend a lot of time sitting on the chairs between runs.
The town of Breckenridge is a good place for a family to spend a ski vacation with lots of dining and lodging options. The annual Winter Ullr Festival is a great time to visit Breckenridge. Professional teams of sculptors from all over the world descend on the town for the snow sculpture contest and the results are fantastic.
Favorite runs; Y-Chute, Snow White, Mustang, Inferno, Mine Shaft and Windows.
Good terrain parks for the jibbers and bonkers.
Dislikes
The PARKING: It was a shock to me when I first moved to Colorado from New England to find that they actually have the nerve to charge people for the privilege of parking at a ski area when they’re about to charge you $90+ to ski there. At Breckenridge there is ONE free lot on the outskirts of the resort, Gold Rush Parking Lot. You’ll have to take a shuttle bus from the lot to the BreckConnect Gondola which will take you up to the Peak 8 base to start your day. Or you can bite the bullet and fork over $15-$20 to park a little closer in. Don’t do it… Spite ‘em!
The WIND: Locals don’t refer to the Breckenridge as Brokenwind for nothing! I’ve been on the T-Bar (yeah they still have a T-Bar) when the wind was pelting us with ice pellets so hard you felt like you were getting interrogated by Dick Cheney.
The PRICE: Breckenridge is not cheap, while you can hunt around for some bargains. Be prepared to drop some heavy iron on food and lodging. Skier’s Tip: Get the Colorado Pass or the Peaks Pass before the season starts and save some serious coin compared to the day ticket rate.
