Despite growing up only 35 minutes away from Bristol, I never actually skied there until this past Christmas! The contrast between Bristol, a public area, to my home mountain of Hunt Hollow, a smaller, private club only 10 minutes further away, were actually fewer than what I had originally anticipated. Well, at least on the day in which I was there skiing. People were pretty much friendly, crowds we not horrible, and neither was the terrain or snow. Some memorable runs included Rocket, Bristol’s signature black-diamond race run, and Galaxy, a nice wide blue-square ripper where you can really arc some monster GS turns and get the blood flowing. All in all, not such a bad day at Bristol.
Dislikes
As much as Bristol was amusing, it wasn’t anything extra special either, and my day there confirmed that for all those years I really didn’t miss a whole lot. One interesting aspect of the experience was that I was only able to bring my boots back home with me on my travels, and had to rent skis and poles. The rental shop itself was OK, but nothing special. Gear seemed to be well kept enough to be usable, personnel was acceptable in their knowledge of things, but nothing really stood out to me. Aside from getting to enjoy the day with old friends on the hill, Bristol itself left kind of a plain-Jane feel in my memory. Not bad, but nothing that would lure me back with urgency come the next time I’m back home in Upstate New York.
