Mittersill Ski Area GHOST SKI HILL Historic/Ghost Area Resort (Are you this resort?)

Mittersill Ski Area, Cannon Mountain’s little sister to the northwest, operated from the early 1940’s to about 1980. Developed around the historic Taft Race trail by Austrian refugees, Mittersill had a 1,500 foot vertical drop with nine trails served by a double chair and two T-Bars.

General Comments/Likes

We skied Mittersill Ski Area quite a bit in the late 1970’s. It was our Plan B ski choice if the parking lot at Cannon was full. It had about 600’ less vertical than Cannon (1,500’ total) but had a couple of steep runs and a nice base area. It’s still skiable as the Franconia Ski Club keeps the trails cleared and there’s some pretty good tree skiing if you make the hike over from Cannon (check out the video). The State of New Hampshire and Cannon Mountain have plans to reopen the Mittersill area which will make Cannon the biggest ski area in the state of New Hampshire.
Favorite runs; Taft trail, Sky Line Trail and the bumps on the Chair Lift Trail.

Dislikes

None, I always remember having a great time at Mittersill, it was rarely crowded and the snow didn’t seem to get as icy as Cannon’s.
