General Comments/Likes
Mueller State Park sits at the western flank of Pikes Peak. This area permits nordic skiing and snowshoeing on over 50 miles of trails. This is a backcountry area; trails are not groomed and there is no track set. Pets are not allowed on the trails or in the back country but may be leash walked at the closed campground. The elevation (about 9700 feet) and the proximity to Pikes Peak generate a decent snowfall. Still south-facing aspects are likely to lose cover quickly. If you stick to the north aspects and glades/treed areas you will be rewarded with some decent terrain. If you ski the drainages you can bushwack and break trail in some bucolic settings. Overall there are fine vistas of nearby Pikes Peak and distant views of the Sangre de Cristo Range. Entrance fee is six dollars. The park distributes an info sheet with suggested skiing/snowshoe trails graded by difficulty.
