YOU COULD DIE HERE TODAY, is the first thing you read on the trail map, that can only mean one thing, you’re skiing Silverton, Colorado. Looking at my rating you might think how can an area with so many NA’s (8, restrooms, snow grooming, terrain parks, children’s facilities, dining, shopping, service) rate so high? Well this is Silverton! You don’t go here for shopping or dining or groomers or terrain parks. You go here for the most awesome terrain that Colorado has to offer. There is one chair, the “lodge” is a tent and the rental shop is a broken down school bus half buried in snow. Silverton is all about the skiing (and snowboarding). Lift lines? not when there’s less than one hundred skiers on the mountain. Snowmaking? Not needed at a mountain that gets some of the deepest snow in the state of Colorado. Lift tickets are cheap during unguided season, but go with a guide because they can show you things that you’d never find on your own. I love a mountain where the liftie scans your avalanche beacon before he checks your lift ticket. Great apres ski scene in the yurt, PBR on tap and you sit on seats pulled out of old vans while you lie about how many runs you got in. I got 5 and I was on the first chair and the last chair and didn’t take a break. As for the restrooms? Just don’t pee on the buried cache at the top of the lift. Oh and the town of Silverton is like taking a trip back in time, either the 1860’s or the 1960’s not quite sure which. For more photos check out: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/27171425

Ok if you need groomed runs, a ski school, high-speed quads and um… food, then this is not the place for you. But if a true ski adventure is what you’re looking for then check out Silverton.
