General Comments/Likes

If Denver has a local hill, it would be Winter Park. I use the term hill colloquially because if you include Mary Jane, this area has about every kind of terrain and lots (3000 acres) of it. Big vert (3000’) too. Generally good snow, catches a lot of the cold front snows that often elude the Summit County areas when there’s not a major storm system. Not crowded once you get on the fringes. Natives friendly. At WP proper, Hughes is a great speed groomer/race course. The ski train apparently is no longer operating as of this (09-10) season but that would have been a fine way to get there from Denver. Hope they restart service.

You’ll want to eat at the Shipwreck on the old route 40. Great Po Boys. The Gasthaus is a nice lodge in town with very good food. They also serve Dortmunder (iirc) beer in enormous mugs, but you can get a regular-sized glass too. Star of India has decent food in town.

Dislikes

I-70. $12-$20 Belgian beers. Probably not the best choice for destination skiers, because between the base and the town of Winter Park there is not too much happening. New base area development has a hollow look and feel about it.
